Heavy rains and flash urban flooding in Karachi has paralysed the metropolitan city. First few spells in last two weeks badly affected some parts of the city but recent spells among the worst ever Karachi has seen in many decades.
Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan with over 16 million population according to government census. The metropolis has seen many tragedies and violence moves in the past, however in last few years the city is badly hit by heat waves and urban flooding.
Though the most recent spell has affected whole of the city including the well-off sectors of DHA but Surjani Town, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Orangi Town, Shah Faisal Town, Liyari, parts of Gulistan e Johar and Gulshan e Iqbal are among the worst hit parts of the city.
Response
Government and other authorities have been making attempts to control the situation but due to lack of capacity, resources and political unrest as well as major changes to the infrastructure and plan of city situation is beyond the control. Disaster management authorities, civil and military establishments, NGOs and Relief organisations are also on the ground and helping the suffering population.
Proposed Intervention
Along with rescue and life saving efforts, relief activities also needed on large scale to support devastated people. Majority of highly affected locations with dense population urgently need food and ration supplies so that they can sustain and protect them from hunger. Majority of affected communities belong to daily wagers and due to rains businesses and industries are completely closed down so they are left with no source of income to feed them and their families.
Family heads and breadwinners have already been facing difficult times due to lockdown in wake of COVID19. In this situation rains and floods have emerged as a big threat to the lives of thousands.
In this situation a ration pack with at least 2 weeks supplies can be very helpful to such affectees to sustain and fight with other damages to them and their families.
